Kids in Chiropractic

Yesterday, I took my youngest son Alex (5 months) to the medical doctor.  He had never met his medical doctor since both he and his older brother were born at home.  .

Having never been to see her with either of my kids aside from check-ups during my pregnancies, this was an unusual event for us.  My reason for bringing him was to get another professional's opinion on his cough which has been persisting for the last few weeks.  It has since improved immensely since I adjusted him prior to his appointment yesterday.   She re-assured me his lungs were doing fine. The reason for my writing this is from a parent's perspective, my children's health is a huge priority as it is for so many parents.  Being a mom, I encounter a lot of other moms whose children have trouble with ear infections, colic, breathing difficulties, asthma, abnormal sleep patterns etc...  I'd love to share with you how much easier it's been for Jason and I as parents to live the chiropractic lifestyle with our kids.

Both of our kids were adjusted on the day they were born, in fact they were under chiropractic care prior to their birth as I was getting adjusted regularly throughout my pregnancies.  Not only did this help me have a healthier and more vibrant pregnancy, keeping my spine in alignment with my pelvis balanced allowed me to experience a smoother delivery and allowed for a more optimal position for a growing baby.

A particular concern of chiropractors is when there is force applied to the baby's head and neck during delivery, as this is a cause of much birth trauma.  Unnatural birthing positions also add to the risk of birth trauma.  The use of drugs during labor and delivery that may interfere with the mother's intuition of natural birthing can also contribute to the use of additional force during delivery.  External forces applied during delivery may cause undetected injury to the baby's spine and cranium as well as to the delicate nervous system they are protecting.  Sometimes these injuries are obvious, but more often than not injury has occurred during the course of normal obstetric delivery procedures that is not detected.  Birth trauma may have long lasting effects on the child's future health status.

Every parent can relate to the amount of bumps and bruises their child experiences in the first few years as they have falls and tumbles while becoming familiar with their surroundings.  They jar their spine by falling on their butts repetitively, hit their heads on things when they're trying to walk.  Getting their spines checked regularly can help prevent an accumulation of strains to their spine.
During the first 10-15 years of their lives, children go through the greatest amount of growth and development.  One of the analogies I love to use is a small tree that was planted in our yard and throughout our new street when we first moved here a few years back.  Some of us on our street decided to assist the tree in growing straight by supporting it with a strong rope.  This would protect it from the windy conditions and elements it was being exposed to.  Last year, I noticed one that didn't have the reinforcement and was therefore growing crooked.  Could it still be corrected?  Absolutely, but it will take more time to correct and may always have a remnant of misalignment to it.  So, when is a good time to bring your child for a spinal check-up?  You decide, it is never too late but from our experience, the sooner a child begins the more likely they will experience a more optimally functioning nervous system which will allow them to express their full health potential.

Good luck and please let us know if we can be of any assistance to you and your family on your quest for wellness.  This is truly our passion and we live and breathe it!!!
